Norwegian Unveils More Project Breakaway Staterooms

Options abound for families, groups, solo travelers and spa enthusiasts

Miami – Sep 8, 2011 —

MIAMI – September 8, 2011 – Norwegian Cruise Line (“Norwegian”) today unveiled the balance of stateroom designs, including The Studio, Spa Balcony, Spa Mini-Suite, Oceanview, Family Mini-Suite, and Inside staterooms — for Project Breakaway, the company’s two new next generation Freestyle Cruising ships scheduled for delivery in April 2013 and April 2014. Similar to the Balcony and Mini-Suite staterooms revealed this summer, these staterooms combine the form and function of the line’s Jewel class ships’ staterooms with the modern and contemporary design touches of Norwegian Epic.

Norwegian is continuing the popular award-winning Studio staterooms for solo travelers on the Project Breakaway ships. The 59 Studios on each ship are specifically designed and priced for the solo traveler with an innovative bathroom design that includes a separate sink and shower to provide more personal space. The Studios, the majority of which connect, feature a full-size bed with convenient lighted recess above the bed to hold books, magazines, tablet computers or electronic reading devices and have a unique window to the corridor. These rooms also have private keycard access to the Studio complex and exclusive two-story Studio Lounge with a bar.

For those who like to relax, the 28 Spa Balcony and the 20 Spa Mini-Suite staterooms feature tranquil spa décor and have easy access to the adjacent spa and fitness center, as well as complimentary access to the Thermal Spa Suite during operating hours.

On the Project Breakaway ships, Norwegian is re-introducing Oceanview staterooms that feature large picturesque windows. Of the 158 Oceanview staterooms on each ship, there are approximately 42 Family Oceanviews that sleep up to five guests and have a bathroom similar to the Mini-Suite with a modern double sink, bath tub and a second wardrobe for added storage.

The Family Mini-Suites located on Deck 12 and 13 feature all the attributes of the Mini-Suite and are located in close proximity to the children’s facilities, making it convenient and easy for families. For families with small children, there are a number of staterooms with bath tubs.

Project Breakaway ships include 449 Inside staterooms that feature two lower beds that can be converted to a queen-size bed. Many are connecting and sleep up to four guests. They are located on various decks throughout the ship and some are adjacent to the children’s facilities.

Each of the 144,017 gross ton vessels will have approximately 4,000 passenger berths. Project Breakaway ships represent an opportunity for the Norwegian guest to “break away” from the routine of work, school, and daily stress, and find a true respite at sea. These new ships will take the best of the best from all of Norwegian’s existing ships drawing on the line’s experience of having launched 10 ships in the past 10 years – starting with Norwegian Star and Sun in 2001 and culminating with the launch of Norwegian Epic in 2010.

Norwegian commissioned design group Priestmangoode of the United Kingdom and Tillberg Design of Sweden, to design the staterooms for Project Breakaway. Priestmangoode won accolades and awards for designing the Studios, the first staterooms designed specifically for solo travelers, on Norwegian Epic.

Sydney ports could reach capacity by 2013

Sydney’s port facilities could hit capacity as early as 2013 if a new terminal isn’t built to cope with growing demand, an international cruise company is warning.

Australia’s cruise market is expanding so quickly that existing facilities won’t be able to accommodate the increasing number of large ships wanting to enter Sydney Harbour, says Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd.

“We have a good situation that needs attention before becoming a problem,” Royal Caribbean’s Australian managing director Gavin Smith said in a statement on Thursday.

The Miami-based company is calling on the NSW government to reconsider the $60 million allocated by the previous Labor government to build a new terminal in White Bay, in Sydney’s inner west.

It says the proposed terminal would not be able to support the growing number of ships that are too big to fit under the Harbour Bridge.

“Our view is $60 million is a considerable amount of money to invest in a permanent terminal west of the Harbour Bridge that most ships calling into Sydney in the future won’t be able to use,” Mr Smith said.

“It would be more prudent and viable to redeploy a large part of the funding towards a terminal (east of the bridge) the whole industry can use.”

A spokesman for NSW Minister for Roads and Ports, Duncan Gay, said the government was considering a report on the proposed passenger terminal at White Bay.

He said Sydney Ports had also begun a review of mooring options to handle larger ships at the Overseas Passenger Terminal in Circular Quay.

“Sydney Ports is committed to providing facilities that support the future growth of the cruise industry in Sydney,” he told AAP.

Royal Caribbean Cruises is deploying an additional three superliners to Sydney in the coming seasons, which it expects will increase its capacity four-fold, or by 100,000 guests.

“Add to that the deployments coming from competing cruise line companies that can only use facilities east of the Bridge,we need to consider the near future in order to assist our economy to grow to its full potential by ensuring we have the proper infrastructure to support its growth,” Mr Smith said.

He says demand for cruising in and around Australia is unlikely to slow, given the strength of the Asian tourism market and the expected increase of cruises between the Caribbean and Pacific.

“This is an opportunity Australia must grasp with both hands.”

Sydney ports could reach capacity by 2013.

Maritime Superstitions Set Sail on the High Seas « Why Not?

Captain Bill Wright Senior Vice President, Marine Operations for Royal Caribbean International

Maritime Superstitions Set Sail on the High Seas

Hi…. my name is Captain Bill Wright and I am Senior Vice President, Marine Operations for Royal Caribbean International and Azamara Club Cruises. In this role my responsibilities are for the safe and reliable maritime operations of the combined fleets of both brands totaling 24 ships and a whopping 2,623,140 GRT.

The Royal fleet of course includes the two largest cruise ships in the world, the remarkable Oasis of the Seas and Allure of the Seas. I sometimes refer to my SVP position as my “day job” because over the years I have been extremely fortunate and honored to be the first Captain on several ships while still maintaining my land based responsibilities for the fleet. Most recently I was the first Captain on Oasis of the Seas and in 2006 the first Captain on Freedom of the Seas. I was also the first Captain on Celebrity Cruise’s Xpedition sailing to the Galapagos Islands, which happens to be the smallest ship in the company!

Adam asked me to write about maritime superstitions in about 500 words and I feel like I could use 500 pages as there is no shortage of seafaring superstitions! My problem is where to start…

Needless to say, maritime superstitions go back as far as man has gone to sea and that’s a long, long time! So here is a fun and interesting list of a few of them….

Black traveling bags are bad luck for a seaman.

Black is the color of death and indicative of the depths of the sea.

Avoid people with red hair when going to the ship to begin a journey.

Red heads bring bad luck to a ship, which can be averted if you speak to the red-head before they speak to you.

Never say good luck or allow someone to say good luck to you unanswered.

If someone says “good luck” to you, it is most assuredly a bad omen and sure to bring about bad luck. The only way this can be countered is by drawing blood. A swift punch in the nose is usually sufficient to reverse this curse.

Avoid Flat-footed people when beginning a trip.

Like with redheads, the danger can be avoided by speaking to them before they speak to you.

A stolen piece of wood mortised into the keel will make a ship sail faster.

A silver coin placed under the masthead ensures a successful voyage.

We actually still put coins under the keel of every new ship when they are built. When the ship is floated out of the dry-dock the coins are recovered and welded in a steel box usually on the forward mast to sail with the ship forever as good luck! You can learn more by watching this video:

Disaster will follow if you step onto a boat with your Left Foot first.

Pouring wine on the deck will bring good luck on a long voyage.

An offering to the gods……..%
