The booking volume for the week ended July 10, 2010 is the highest this year, second only to the previous week ended July 3, 2010. Media exposure during the inaugural activities and positive reviews from both travel partners and the press are helping to fuel the demand.

Norwegian Cruise Line Partners With SVEDKA Vodka on First True Ice Bar At Sea

In another first, Norwegian Cruise Line has announced an exclusive partnership with SVEDKA Vodka and Inniskillin ice wine to be introduced on board Norwegian Epic, its largest and most innovative Freestyle Cruising ship ever. As part of the partnership, this unique frozen bar will be called the SVEDKA Ice Bar and will feature specialty SVEDKA and Inniskillin ice wine drinks.

Inspired by the original ice bars and ice hotels in Scandinavia, the cruise industry’s first true ice bar is the ultimate chill. This frozen chamber is set in changing hues of blue, green and purple LED lighting that simulates the Northern Lights and creates a distinctive arctic atmosphere. The SVEDKA Ice Bar features a bar, walls, tables, stools, glasses and life-size sculptures all made from ice. Guests are given hooded coats and gloves to keep them warm, since the room’s temperature does not rise above 17 degrees Fahrenheit.

The SVEDKA Ice Bar accommodates 25 people and can be reserved from 5:30 p.m.-10:30 p.m. nightly. The cost is $20 per person and includes two signature cocktails. There are six specialty drinks made from SVEDKA vodka and Inniskillin ice wine including:

– Polaris: SVEDKA Citron, Inniskillin ice wine, and lemon/lime soda;

– Cobalt Blue: Inniskillin ice wine, SVEDKA vodka and Blue Curacao;

– Nordic Apple Juice: SVEDKA vodka, Sour Apple Schnapps, Midori and a splash of fresh sour;

– Caribbean Dreams: SVEDKA Citron, Triple Sec and lemon juice;

– Sunburst Yellow: SVEDKA vodka, peach liquor and orange juice; and

– Northern Lights: SVEDKA Citron, Cointreau and Blue Curacao.

There are also two non-alcoholic drinks the Strawberry Eskimo Kiss made of strawberry puree, pineapple juice and lemon juice and the Creamsickle, with orange juice, vanilla ice cream and milk – in case children want to partake in the chilling fun. All drinks are served in specially-created glasses made entirely of ice.

Imported from Sweden, SVEDKA Vodka is premium vodka that is distilled five times. Inniskillin ice wine is made from grapes that are produced in the Niagara Peninsula. Pearl ice wine, which is used in the SVEDKA Ice Bar cocktails, is an intensely concentrated sweet wine made from grapes naturally frozen on the vine. Grapes for this ice wine are harvested at a temperature of 14ºF.

In addition to the SVEDKA Ice Bar, SVEDKA vodkas and Inniskillin ice wines are served throughout Norwegian Epic, in all bars and restaurants. Also starting in July, SVEDKA Vodka products will be served on other Norwegian ships in the fleet. To get a preview of the SVEDKA Ice Bar, visit the Norwegian Epic channel on YouTube at www.ncl.com/youtube.

Norwegian Epic will be the host venue for the 34th Annual Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks event taking place on Sunday, July 4. The event includes a national, one-hour, live entertainment broadcast on NBC-TV beginning at 9 p.m. ET. Norwegian Epic – “studio” cabins

By Gene Sloan, USA TODAY

WEDNESDAY, 1:21 PM GMT

One of the most anticipated new features on the Norwegian Epic is its complex of 128 “studio” cabins — small, stylish interior rooms that are being sold to solo travelers. So does the area — billed as a game-changer in interior cabin presentation — live up to the hype?

Last night I got a chance to try the complex out with an overnight stay, and I have nothing but praise.

Located in the middle of decks 11 and 12, the area includes a snazzy private “studio lounge” — a shared, two-story social space with a bar, two large TV screens and comfy seating. But the highlight of the area, no doubt, is the cabins themselves, which are a refreshing burst of creativity in ship design.

At just 100 square feet, the studios are less than half the size of the 217-square-foot “New Wave” balcony cabins that make up the majority of the ship’s accommodations, but they’re so cleverly put together that they don’t seem nearly as cramped as they should.

An alternative to the traditional inside cabin, each of the rooms comes with a full-size bed and an innovative, streamlined wall unit that includes closet space for hanging clothes, a number of small shelves, a nook with a flat-screen TV, a small desk area and a built-in sink area.

On the opposite wall from the bed, in one corner, is a compact shower stall that features lovely glass-tiled back walls and a glass surround. In the other corner is a small room containing a toilet.

The rooms also have a large round window that looks out into the
corridor — a nice touch that helps alleviate the claustrophobia of inside cabins. In addition to closeable blinds, the translucent windows have sliding-door closures for total privacy.

The window area, along with the entire cabin, comes with customizable color changing light effects that mirror different stages of the day (including a much-ballyhooed “love setting” that bathes the room in a romantic red glow). A control panel next to the bed allows passengers to switch between four different settings.

The overall decor of the room is sleek and contemporary, with a mostly monotone white and cream color palette accented by tiny splashes of purple and green.

Norwegian hired an outside firm, London’s Priestman-Goode, to design the rooms, and it deserves kudos. Indeed, it’s too bad the line didn’t contract with the firm to design all of the ship’s cabins.

Despite being smaller, the sink area of the studio cabin is much more functional than the sink area of the ship’s balcony cabins, with a faucet perfectly sized for a sink basin that is molded into the counter-top. Unlike when using the raised-bowl sink in my balcony cabin, water did not splash all over the counter when I washed my hands. And the toilet compartment is both more private and more solidly designed than the toilet area in the balcony cabin.

Another smart touch are the sliding doors on the wall unit that allow for a narrower space between the unit and the bed (as none of the unit’s doors opens outward). Even for one traveler, the storage space for clothes in the wall unit is limited, but as a backup there also are large baskets under the front of the bed that can be filled with passenger items. Additional room under the back of the bed can be used to store one’s suitcase.

Interestingly, Norwegian originally planned to market the cabins for two people, aiming at travelers on a super-tight budget who didn’t mind jamming into a tiny room to save money. But the line quickly changed its mind after initial feedback, and it appears they made the right move.

It’s been a long time since a cruise line has built a ship with cabins for solo travelers, and Norwegian executives already say they’re seeing strong demand for the product.

Royal Caribbean Partners With Ecospec on Pilot Test of Emission Abatement System

Royal Caribbean Partners With Ecospec on Pilot Test of Emission Abatement System Onboard Independence of the Seas

MIAMI, June 17 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Furthering Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd.’s commitment to reducing their greenhouse gas footprint by one-third per available passenger cruise day by 2015, the global cruise line today announced that it is partnering with Ecospec to install a pilot test of their CSNOx system on Royal Caribbean International’s Independence of the Seas.

The CSNOx system was introduced by Ecospec in January 2009, and is the world’s first abatement technology reported to remove sulfur dioxide (SOx), oxides of nitrogen (NOx) and carbon dioxide (CO2) from engine emissions in one process.  Royal Caribbean is the first cruise operator to initiate a feasibility study with Ecospec to explore the potential for installation of CSNOx systems on a cruise ship.

“Every day, we are actively researching methodologies and technologies that will reduce our emissions of not only SOx and NOx, but also CO2 as part of our comprehensive strategy to reduce our environmental impact,” said Jamie Sweeting, global chief environmental officer and vice president of environmental stewardship for Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd.  “Our guiding principle of Above and Beyond Compliance, which is ingrained in our operating philosophy, challenges us to rise above what is required by law.  We are optimistic that the CSNOx system will help us to meet our goal.”

Previously, the CSNOx technology was installed and tested on White Sea, a Tanker Pacific vessel in 2009.  The results of this test, published by Ecospec in February 2010, revealed an impressive 99 percent reduction of SOx, 66 percent reduction of NOx, and a 77 percent reduction of CO2.  Additionally, wash water test results also surpassed the International Maritime Organization’s exhaust gas cleaning discharge criteria.  The Royal Caribbean pilot test is expected to be complete by the spring of 2011.

Celebrity Cruises and Florida International University Put the ‘Ship’ in Internship With Groundbreaking Program Focusing on Design

Students from master’s degree program to design venue on fifth Solstice-class ship MIAMI, June 17, 2010 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ –Celebrity Cruises, the cruise brand known for designing award-winning, stylish ships with stunning onboard spaces that cater to the tastes of discerning cruisers, is tapping into a new resource: the fresh, eager minds of Florida International University (FIU) design students. Last week marked the start of a groundbreaking internship program focused on giving students the opportunity to participate in Celebrity’s ability to create aesthetic beauty in its onboard interior design. Four graduate-level interior design students have the opportunity to make their mark – literally – on Celebrity’s widely anticipated fifth Solstice-class ship, which will set sail in 2012.

The students are tasked with working together to update the design of one of the venues on the fifth Solstice-class ship, which will debut in 2012. Their team-based assignment will mirror that of any professional cruise-ship design process, and will include brand immersion, concept development, analysis of the space as a stand-alone venue and as part of the larger ship design. By the end of the program, the students will deliver a full design package for the venue, including all required documentation to secure the successful development, engineering and execution of the design concept. This documentation ranges from the initial inspirations in sketch format to the fully realized accurate computer-generated designs. The project envelope will include not only components related to spatial requirements such as representations of floor layout, walls, ceilings, furniture, finishes and equipment, but also include those components which enhance the unique ambience of every venue, such as signage design, artwork concept, decorative lighting, among others. Celebrity’s own Newbuilding Architectural Design team will then partner with the shipbuilder, Meyer Werft, to bring the students’ plans to life. Construction on the ship is slated to begin in early 2011 at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany.

When Celebrity Cruises launched Celebrity Solstice in 2008, it introduced a new era in cruise ship design. Along with Celebrity’s signature extraordinary service and award-winning cuisine, Celebrity Solstice and her four Solstice-class sister ships – two of which are already at sea, with the other two launching in 2011 and 2012 – feature hip, stylish public rooms; larger staterooms inspired by a panel of five women representing a diverse cross-section of discerning travelers; the first solar panels at sea; and the first dedicated glassblowing studio at sea, presented in partnership with the world-renowned Corning Museum of Glass.

The ships also offer discerning cruisers the opportunity to enjoy “The Lawn Club,” the first lawn of real, growing grass, where guests can practice their golf putting, play croquet and bocce, or simply feel cool grass beneath their feet while miles out at sea; the first Celebrity iLounge, equipped with MacBook Pros; AquaClass, a category of staterooms inspired by the spa lifestyle; five specialty restaurants; and Team Earth.

“Every element of the Solstice-class ships, from the way we laid the staterooms out on each deck to interlock rather than reside side-by-side, to the height and texture of the chairs in the Murano specialty restaurant, is carefully designed to offer our guests an inimitable cruise vacation experience as well as to serve as a functional element of a working, premium hotel,” said Harri Kulovaara, Executive Vice President, Newbuilding and Fleet Design for Celebrity’s parent company, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. “When we first designed these industry-changing ships, we engaged a panel of women to help us maximize stateroom innovations. Now, we are tapping into the freshest, brightest minds around – those of students at the FIU Master of Interior Design Program – to take one of the venues on our fifth Solstice Class ship to the next level. We welcome their ideas and our team is poised to guide them through this career-enhancing experience.”

“We are thrilled that Celebrity Cruises offered our students the first opportunity of this kind,” said Janine King, IIDA IDEC, Chair of Florida International University’s Department of Interior Design. “Not only will these future designers have hands-on experience, but they will also end up with real plans and real photos of an actual cruise ship venue, when all is said and done, and that’s priceless.”

The four students are participants in Florida International University’s School of Architecture Master of Interior Design program, which soon will offer a 15-credit certificate in cruise ship interior design – the only one of its kind in the nation – in its line-up. The school currently offers a six-credit cruise ship design studio taught by Greg Walton of RTKL, one of the design firms that helped to create the Solstice-class ships.

The students participating in the project are all second-year graduate students in the interior design master’s degree program. Their international backgrounds illuminate Florida International University’s diverse student makeup. All reside in Miami, but Andrea Leano and Jenny Valencia hail originally from Bogota, Colombia. Sabrina Ocner is originally from Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Ismabys Senra is from Havana, Cuba.

“We are proud to not only represent FIU and help generate awareness of its great interior design program, but we also are honored to be chosen to share the fresh perspective that so many young people have, and to represent our individual countries,” said Valencia.

“It’s really remarkable, being exposed to this opportunity,” said Leano. “We are actually creating something that will be valued by Celebrity’s guests, and that’s something great
