People considering a cruise ship job need a few essential qualities, Mr Kollar says.

“Flexibility is key,” he says. “To work on a ship you need to understand the importance of protocol and procedures and you also need to have an aptitude for outside-the-box problem solving.”

So how long do you actually spend at sea? Mr Kollar says contract lengths vary depending on the position.

“Deck and service crew would work six to nine months while entertainment staff generally work on four-month contracts,” he says.

“Most are employed contract-to-contract, so the interim break is at their discretion, though the cruise lines will suggest a time period, such as two months.

“At the officer level, many work four months on and two months off, while captains may do three months on and three months off.”

And the pay?
